Activity Days “120 Years of Radio”

On May 7, 1895 a Russian physicist and electrical engineer Alexander Popov presented a device, that received signals from the Hertz spark vibrator at a meeting of the Russian Physical and Chemical Society in St. Petersburg.
This experiment demonstrated the possibility of transmitting messages over a distance without wires. In Russia and some other countries, May 7 is celebrated as the “Day of Radio”.
In connection with the 120th anniversary of this event the SRR (Soyuz Radiolyubitelei Rossii) organizes and conducts the Activity Days “120 Years of Radio.” More info radio120.hamlog.ru The Activity period was started at 21.00UTC  UTC  March, 31  and will be over at 20.59 UTC April, 30, 2015.
There are 4 types of awards: MIXED, CW, SSB, DIGITAL. Below are, which I received.

EME from Seychellen by German team

Hermann DL2
NUD, Peter DJ4TC and Peter DL1RPL are QRV via the moon from 2015-03-20 fros79emem Seychellen, as a S79EME. Full information regarding to this DX-pedion  is here. Today was first active day on 144 Mhz. Weak Aurora made troubles with decoding of JT65B signals and polarity of the signals was changed very quick. Nevertheless, after about 2 hours of calling, I completed QSO and got new DXCC (#144), new field (#91) and new square (#863). They will QRV on 70 cm on 27th and 30th of March. This will be my next target. We’ll see…

Today, 27th of March, we complete 70 cm EME QSO too. The Team called itself, as “P&P*, that  means Peter DL1RPL and Peter DJ4TC!
At the first try they answered to me 3 times, but I lost trace . Some minutes later I called again and got answer at -27 db. Good!! We finished QSO and I was #11 in S79EME’s 432 Mhz log. The team heard me with level -22 db.

Antenna rotator replacement

Very strong wind crashed my YAESU G-1000DXC azimuth rotator on 144 mhz antenna
(4 x 2M18XXX) one week before VP8DQE expeditions was activated from grid GD18BH (Falkland islands). But nothing happened with elevation rotator. So, it was possible to get new DXCC and main grid square to rotate antenna manually.  Of course, I need to lower down a mast, to disconnect the rotator from the H-shaped frame and to ask the Lord that there was no wind…
After QSO was completed, on the next day the hard job was started. Few pictures below shows the process.

Step by step:
– some elements of a mast were cutted off;
– special tool for fixing mast after disconnection from reductor;
– screw jack for lifting up antenna’s mast;
– mast is lifted up and fixed;
– rotator removed,
– device for fixing mast.
I installed the same rotator, but older version: G-1000SDX,  so no need to make new holes for screws.

Strong Aurora on 17th of March

All banaur_70cmds were opened (6, 4, 2m and 70cm). But this time my target was only 70 cm band.
11 completed QSO, 11 WW-locators, best ODX 1207 km (UR5LX). I hear more, but they were very weak, so I can not recognize callsigns. From time to time I came out to look at the sky to admire a fine show: you won’t often see such bright aurora in our latitudes.

Good tropo on 12 Feb. 2015

tropo_120215On this morning, around 07 UTC, I’ve got SMS from my friend Matej, OK1TEH. He suggested to check 2 m band for tropo, as he heard beacon OH2VHF/B in JO70FD. Sure, I turned ON my TS-2000 and found “CQ de OK1TEH” with 579 signal report! We complete QSO and  after we tried on 70 cm, but without success.  Than I started to monitor 2 M band and 20 minutes later found SP3IYM, DM1VPL, DL1HTT and some other stations. All from SSW direction. This fine tropo was proceeded almost whole day. My last QSO was with R2FAD on 70 cm at 13:51 UTC. 32 QSO on both bands. More useful to see some statistic by pictures below. And extraction from my logbook in the end of this article.

Year 2014 statistic

Looking back, I was very surprised of my activity in the air. Unexpected, many QSOs on HF bands. But this is, because, I participated in a two great sport events in Russia: The Winter Olympic Games 2014 in Sochi and F1 Russian Grand Prix Sochi Circuit. For this participation I’ve got awards.

Total QSO score 1378: 593 on HF and 785 on VHF and up bands.

Full statistic for VHF bands in the table below. And couple of diagrams too.

New DXCC on 144 MHz – The Sovereign Military Orden of Malta

What could be the best present for radio amateur, who looking for a new countries? Of course, the new country!
And Frank, DL8YHR made this pre1a0c_1sent to all VHF enthusiasts.
From December 29 till January 1, as a team member of the 1A0C group, from S.M.O.M.  he started to work on 144 MHz EME a day before, on 28th… With only 9 el. X-pole DF7KF antenna he started very successful around 16:30 utc on 144.143. But no huge pile-up, as expected. My QSO with 1A0C was very easy and quick: Frank answered after my first call to him.  My QSO was #7. It gave me DXCC # 142 for me. He was -23 db during QSO.
Good job, Frank!
