The Gemenids 2014

The Gemenids – one of the most powerful meteor showers of the year. On this year the maximum  was over the weekend, Dec. 13th and 14th, Earth passed through a stream of debris from “rock comet” 3200 Phgem_14_1aethon. Predicted maximum was on December 14th, 12h UTC with ZHR=120.
I did not participated in BCC, just worked for fun and looked for new callsigns (initials). All my operation prolonged around 7 hours (from 1 t0 3 hours in a day). So, total score of worked stations was 46 (2 QSO not completed). 19 DXCC, 35 grid squares, best ODX=2005 km. gem_14_2Several QSO were very quick to complete – 90 sec/QSO! Nice visual statistic prepared by online  phpQW Tool Log Analysis  (DL4MFM).

Complete log is below.

EME expedition to Surinam

DL2NUD (Hermann) and DL4WO (Wolfgang) now in Surinam and active as PZ5EME and PZ5UD (Nickname “GolfTeam” !!). They started on 26th of November and continued till 8th of December.  Great intention to be on 144/432/1296/2320 and 3400 Mhz! Exact schedule and much more is here.
On first day (27th of Nov) I  was absolutely unlucky! The Faraday rotation was so fast, that I can see sometimes only a half or a quarter of trace in every period. I spent over 3 hours to call them without success and finally, then I lost trace for a few periods, they wrote in N0UK EME chat, that they “did not got answer from me”… Pity!
pz5eme_

On the next day, (28th) I was waited for GolfTeam. They were started around 1515 UTC and I was first, to whom they answered! QSO was quick and easy. So, New DXCC (#141) and new grid square (#855).
They wrote in the chat:

15:24 PZ5EME/GOLFTEAM/Wolf    ES3RF TNX QSO 73 from PARAMARIBO! best-23
Of course, I was happy!
Unfortunately, I will be away on 30th of November, so can not QRV on 70 cm. Only this date they are on 70 cm! Although they have a very dense schedule, I am hope they will return to 70 cm later.

EME expedition to Luxemberg

DH7FB, Frank and DF2ZC, Bernd, made the next attempt to make to an EME community happy. They were started from Luxemberg, JN29, on 15th of November around 0030 utc, but after few firsts QSO got a problem with PA and continued only with 180W output. Than they stopped to work due to a noise issue. On the next morning (Sunday) they continued  on 144.112, but there was totally impossible to work for me. QRG was full of birdies! Look at the picture! I was lucky to decode  only 1 time, but to continue  to call them was simply senseless! And, look like, they also received calling station very bad. As I know, on Sunday they completed only 5 QSOs, than stopped and QRT.
So, only 8 completed QSO,  but no my call sign among themes… Very sad!

FW5JJ – DXCC #140 on 2M band

The well know VHF enthusiast Jean-Jacque Filippi, TK5JJ, now on the small Polynesian  island Wallis.  As he said: “For 2 years or more…”
JJ is active fw5jjon HF and VHF as a FW5JJ and few days ago started on 144 Mhz EME. He has 2 x 12 el. M2 yagis and SSPA. More info and pictures here.
Today was first long enough mutual window, so  I waited until my moon ascended at 3 degrees above horizon and I started to see JJ’s trace. He answered to my first call and we completed QSO in 4 minutes.  He reported in N0UK chat:
                       6 Nov 15:01 145700 0 -26 1.6 -62 2 * FW5JJ ES3RF KO29 Tnx qso
His QSL card I’ve got on 27.12.2014

Z21EME – DXCC #139 on 2M and #37 on 70 cm

Another great expedition!
A team from the Netherlands and South Africa, are QRV via the moon from Zimbabwe. PA3CMC (Lins), PA2CHR (Chris), ZS6JON (John) and ZS6NK Paul). From 1st  till 8 of November 2014 they are QRV as Z21EME in KG58fg on 6m, 2m, 70cm and 23cm.
For me only act
z21emeual 2m and 70 cm. Setup for 23 cm EME still not ready…
So, huge pile-up, as usual! Sometimes I have seen up to 28 traces on my screen. But once I was lucky and new DXCC in my collection.
3rd and 4th of November they were active on 70 cm. Weather conditions in my place were very bad: rain and very strong wind. But, anyway, we completed QSO at 2159 utc: I spent around 2 hours for calling.
In QSO theirs signal was -26 db. I’ve got -22 db.

HB0/DM1CG – DXCC #36 on 70 cm.

Frank DL8YHR, Rainer DF2NU and Carsten DM1CG made a short trip in Vaduz, HB0, for a last weekend in October It was a good chance for me to get new DXCC on 70 cm band. Just 1 day before of this event, I finished reconstruction of my 8×19 el antenna array, because elevation gear (YAESU G-500) was broken and I must to replace one to usual 24″ actuator. At the same time I replaced LNA from MVV 432-VOX (SHF Electronik) to G4DDK. So, it was good chance to test my new setup.
QSO on 70 cm
hb0_dm1cg was complete. I can not say, it was easy. The Faraday rotation was very quick, so signal changed from -23 to -32 S/N. But, thanks for team patience, we completed QSO in 6 minutes. My signal on themes side was -22 db.
On the next day I worked with HB0/DM1CG on 144 Mhz.  It was much easier, they answered me from the first call. Although, I have HB0 on 2M, always a pleasure to get a new EME initial QSO.

Thank you, team!

Ducting Tropo at the end of October

281014_tropoThis time I was lucky to follow to Willam Hepburn’s Worldwide Troposferic Ducting forecast.
On the afternoon, 28th of October, I started to monitor the OZ7IGY/B on 144 Mhz (QRB 847 km). As the beacon running in digital and analog modes, so very easy to monitor his activity, using  the special software. At the normal conditions I can not hear and decode his CW FSK transmission by ears . Continue reading

For this event Kay using callsign V60EME and active EME on 144 Mhz, using 2×12 el. H/V yagi with LNA and 500 W power amplifier. Happy birthday, dear Kay san!
On the first day of operation, I observed his signal from -19 to -29 db over noise level. My QSO was easy enough, after the moon rose over the horizon by 7 degrees. My signal at his side was -19 db. Nice QSO: new DXCC, new grid square, new field! And the QSL-card:
